President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo hailed the newly inaugurated James Town Fishing Harbour as a cornerstone for economic activity, growth, and prosperity for James Town and the broader country.

Speaking at the official commissioning ceremony on September 13, 2024, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the project will give the local community renewed energy.

Reflecting on the project’s journey, President Akufo-Addo recalled his visit in December 2018 when he first laid the foundation for the harbour.

He had promised the harbour would transition from a conceptual plan to a tangible reality under his leadership.

“Skeptics told you that this was merely a political gimmick,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“I am proud to have fulfilled that promise. This port stands as a symbol of hope, illustrating the resilience and determination of our people and what we can achieve when we work together.”

The President highlighted the harbour’s role in job creation, economic empowerment, and revitalization of local livelihoods.

“This port will invigorate this community, and its benefits will extend nationwide,” he stated, drawing a parallel with Elmina’s thriving fishing industry.

“James Town will similarly become a hub of economic activity and prosperity.”

The James Town Fishing Harbour significantly enhances Ghana’s fishing industry.

The project, developed through collaboration with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), CRCC Harbour & Channel Engineering Bureau Group Co Ltd, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), was funded with assistance from the People’s Republic of China.

Key components of the project include dredging, breakwater construction, berthing facilities, and navigational aids, which will create a deeper and safer harbour basin for efficient operations.

The development also features well-paved transport areas, reliable water supply and drainage systems, and comprehensive electrical infrastructure.

Additional facilities include an administration building, a fish market, an ice-making plant, shops, cold storage, a kindergarten, a fire protection station, and repair workshops.

Mechanical equipment such as shipyard slipways, cold storage areas, and environmental protection vehicles further support the harbour’s operations.

The harbour’s corrosion prevention systems will ensure the longevity and reliability of critical infrastructure, reinforcing the government’s commitment to advancing maritime and fishing infrastructure for economic growth.
