President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the Methodist Church of Ghana to continue its vital role in nation-building by standing firm on truth, justice, and righteousness principles.

Addressing the 13th Biennial/51st Annual Conference of the Methodist Church at the Wesley Cathedral in Kumasi, the President underscored the importance of Christian maturity and the Church’s responsibility in fostering moral and social development within Ghana.

Reflecting on the conference theme, “Discipleship: Growing into Christian Maturity,” Akufo-Addo highlighted the Church’s significant contributions to the nation, particularly in education, healthcare, and social welfare.

“The Methodist Church has been a symbol of faith, education, and social service, contributing significantly to the nation’s progress,” Akufo-Addo said.

He urged the Church to persist in its invaluable work, emphasizing that Christian discipleship involves not just individual growth but communal support and encouragement in faith.

The President also addressed the Church’s role as a prophetic voice in society, urging it to speak out against injustice, corruption, and moral decay.

“Our advocacy should be rooted in biblical principles, aimed at promoting the common good,” he asserted.

Akufo-Addo called for the Church to support policies that align with God’s will for justice and peace, reminding it of its responsibility to uphold moral standards and guide the nation.

In a direct critique, Akufo-Addo expressed disappointment with certain clergy members forecasting electoral violence and manipulation.

He criticized those who sow discord instead of promoting peace and unity, asserting, “I am certain that the behaviour of the Ghanaian people and their government and public authorities will shame all the naysayers, including some persons of the cloth.”

The President’s remarks served as both a reflection on the past and a forward-looking call to action. He urged the Methodist Church to remain a beacon of hope and justice as Ghana approaches the 2024 elections.

He thanked the Church for its longstanding support of his government. He encouraged continued collaboration with his successor, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and his running mate, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

The conference, attended by numerous clergy, dignitaries, and congregants, provided a significant platform for discussing the Church’s role in Ghana’s socio-political landscape, especially in the upcoming elections.
