The 92 year old leader, who recently celebrated his birthday in Masvingo said he is still as fit as a fiddle and wants to reach 100 years.

Speaking on the possibility of a naming a successor Mugabe said he will neither choose a successor nor retire as that would be against the party conventions. Mugabe also dismissed speculation that his wife First Lady, Grace Mugabe could take over from him.

In a two-hour interview with the ZBC TV yesterday, President Mugabe said: “Why successor? I am still there. Why do you want a successor? I did not say I was a candidate to retire, only to retire midway. I never said that. I was a candidate for the term, for the term”.

Zanu PF has been rocked by intense infighting, which culminated in the ouster of Mugabe’s former trusted lieutenant Joice Mujuru.

However, the ouster of Mujuru, who launched her political party this week has not stopped the infighting, with the existence of two camps seen to be positioning themselves to take over from Mugabe.

Critics have continued to condemn the Zanu PF for its failure to deliver on election promises, with a myriad of challenges facing the country such as high unemployment and corruption.
