Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday issued a directive mandating stringent cost-cutting measures for both foreign and domestic official trips across the entire federal government, including his own office, the vice president and their spouses.

Tinubu also said that his security personnel and other aides should significantly reduce their expenses during domestic trips. According to presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, speaking at the State House in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, the local security architecture in the states visited would take charge of his security.

Ngelale said that with this initiative, the president aimed to achieve a 60 percent reduction in expenditure on all official visits. Under the new guidelines, all government officials embarking on international trips are required to adhere to a strict budgetary framework, including limiting the size of delegations to align with the government’s austerity goals.

“The president has directed that no more than 20 individuals be allowed to travel with him on international trips. This number will be reduced to five for the first lady. Additionally, the entourage on official international trips for the vice president will be limited to five, and the number for the wife of the vice president’s entourage will also be five,” Ngelale said.

He added that Tinubu approved a new limit of 25 accompanying staff members for his domestic trips, while the vice president’s entourage would be limited to 15, and their spouses’ entourage restricted to 10 members of staff each.

Heads of ministries, departments and agencies were also affected by this cost-cutting initiative, with restrictions placed on the number of officials in their entourage. Ministers are now allowed to travel with only four members of staff, while heads of departments and agencies are limited to traveling with only two aides, he added.
