As local government officials, city mayors and property developers from around the world gather in Dakar, Senegal to discuss urban development in African cities,Amnesty International calls upon them to end forced evictions and respect the right to adequate housing.
Amnesty International delegates will be at the summit to remind city planners, local governments and private companies of their obligations under international human rights law.
Additionally, on 6 December 2012, Amnesty International will launch ?Know Your Obligations?, a guide for local authorities, city planners and others involved in development explaining their obligations under international law relating to forced evictions and the right to adequate housing.
Abdallah Ibn Alhassan (24) a resident of the Old Fadama slum in Accra witnessed hundreds of people being forcibly evicted from Old Fadama slum, where between 55,000 and 79,000 people live with no security of tenure and in constant threat of eviction from the local authorities.
