A prison riot in Harar city, 514 km east of Ethiopia’s capital city Addis Ababa on Tuesday left one inmate dead and two prison guards injured, an Ethiopian official said.

Speaking to journalists, Redwan Adus, Commissioner of Harar regional state Prison Administration Commission, said the death occurred after rioting inmates started fires.

He further said several inmates tried to break out of the prison using the fire as a cover, but the attempt was foiled with the death of one inmate and injury to two prison guards.

The fire also consumed several prison blocks and destruction of documents before it was put out. Enditem
