University of Ghana Professor Ransford Gyampo has called for accountability regarding the National Cathedral project, suggesting that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should be held responsible for any financial loss to the state or have his ex gratia frozen upon leaving office.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points program on Saturday, July 27, Prof. Gyampo asserted, “For the National Cathedral, I think somebody must be sued for causing financial loss to the state. President Akufo-Addo himself must suffer some consequences.”

Gyampo proposed freezing Akufo-Addo’s ex gratia for potential use in covering costs related to the cathedral project, adding, “If that is not enough, then we sue him for having caused financial loss to the state.”

The controversy surrounding the National Cathedral escalated after Minister of State at the Finance Ministry Abena Osei-Asare revealed that GH¢339 million had been expended on the project since 2020. Osei-Asare confirmed this during a parliamentary session on July 3, noting that Deloitte Ghana was conducting audits to scrutinize project expenditures.

“The total releases made by the government for the National Cathedral to date remain at GH¢339 million,” Osei-Asare stated.

This figure includes payments to the National Cathedral Secretariat and project consultants.

Since its inception, the National Cathedral project has sparked debates on its necessity, transparency in funding, and the management of public resources.
