About Sportage
In 1994, the Sportage was introduced to the Ghanaian market. It has sold over seven million units globally across five generations, solidifying its position as Kia’s best-selling model globally since 2015. For 30 years, the Sportage has upheld its legacy of cutting-edge safety, performance, and design.
The 30th Anniversary Special Edition celebrates this heritage while showcasing Kia’s future vision.”
Evolution of the Kia Sportage: A Ghanaian Perspective
The Kia Sportage has undergone a remarkable transformation since its debut, with each generation further enhancing the model’s appeal.
Taking the gathering through the evolution of the Sportage, Eddie Poku, Marketing Manager at Rana Motors disclosed that the first-generation Sportage, Kia’s first vehicle exported globally, laid the foundation for its
success. Its sleek design, spacious interior, and sedan-like driving experience set it apart from traditional off-road SUVs, making it a popular choice in all markets, including Ghana.
According to the Marketing Manager, who doubles as a Vehicle Review Expert, SUVs gained popularity in Ghana; the Sportage evolved to meet the demands of local drivers. The second-generation model introduced a monocoque platform, improving ride comfort, and boosting sales significantly.
Ghanaian drivers, who often navigate diverse terrains, appreciated the vehicle’s balance of safety and performance.
Explaining further, the review expert stated that the third-generation Sportage, known for its bold Tiger Nose grille, became a global success. In Ghana, its stylish design and solid safety ratings made it a favourite among middle-class families. As road safety
and durability became top priorities for Ghanaian consumers, the Sportage’s high safety standards and awards, including a five-
star Euro NCAP rating resonated strongly with the local market.
The fourth and fifth generations, as described by the expert, further enhanced Sportage’s reputation in Ghana. The addition of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and fuel-efficient engine options made it a versatile vehicle for both city Commutes and long-distance travel across the country. As the demand for compact SUVs continued to grow in Ghana, the Sportage maintained its appeal by offering reliability, safety, and style.

Chief Operating Officer’s (COO) Remarks:
At the grand ceremony, Kassem Odaymat, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Rana Motors, delivered a keynote address highlighting Sportage’s remarkable journey.
Speaking further, Mr Odaymat recalled that
from the very beginning of its bold entry into the Ghanaian market, the Sportage fashioned its segment as it was a novelty. “It was never an easy venture, as it is typical to have a negative perception of a relatively new brand that is attempting to introduce an entirely new vehicle form with an unusual chassis into a market that has a host of established vehicle brands”, he noted.
Also the COO pointed out that there was something unique about Sportage that worked the magic of changing the perception of Ghanaians about the brand. “The Sportage’s incredible price offering, sheer strength, toughness and ability to take the beating no matter where it went gradually gained trust among Ghanaians”, he emphasized.
“On our part, a lot of work went into ensuring that early patrons got their money’s worth through the very efficient and reliable service and parts support offered. No Sportage broke
down and got parked for an unreasonable period”, he explained.
Accordingly, Mr Odaymat mentioned that for nine (9) years this versatile trailblazer grew more attuned to the needs of the people, earning their confidence and loyalty. No wonder it picked a couple of notable awards; the world’s first URBAN SUV award in 1993 and JD Power’s automotive performance execution and layout award in 2005″,
