Defender Rashid Sumaila marks Ghana debut

Defender Rashida Sumaila made his Ghana debut during Friday’s 3-1 win over Sudan in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The Ebusua Dwarfs centre-back, currently on loan at Asante Kotoko, replaced Albert Adomah in the 80th minute of the vital win at the El Merriekh Stadium in Omdurman.

The 20-year-old was brought on as further cover to protect Ghana’s 2-1 lead at the time.

His job was however made very easy in the end after Sulley Muntari scored Ghana’s third to add to Asamoah Gyan’s brace.

Sumaila has been in and out of the Black Stars squad for recent games.

He failed to make the final cut of Ghana’s squad for the 2013 Nations Cup haven been included in the provisional list that camped in Abu Dhabi.

The 2011 All Africa Games gold winner has now made his long-awaited debut for the Black Stars albeit as a late substitute.

Sumaila will join South Africa Premier Soccer League side Mamelodi Sundowns this summer.
