President John Mahama has wished Muslims in Ghana well as they celebrate the Eid-ul-fitr festival today.

The President said ?on behalf of all Ghanaians, on behalf of myself, on behalf of government, I wish every Muslim in Ghana?a very cheerful and happy eid-ul-fitr?.

He extended the best wishes when he paid a courtesy call on the national chief Imam in Accra on Wednesday.

Mr. Mahama also urged prospective hajj pilgrims to be fast about their registration for this year?s trip since Saudi Arabia has cut down the 6,700 quota for Ghana, to 5,400 due to certain works being undertaken in the holy land of Mecca.

Also former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife have wished Muslims a happy eid through a statement posted on his website.

The former first family said: ?It is an honour once again for Nana and I to congratulate the entire Muslim community for the successful conclusion of the month-long fasting period culminating in the celebration of the Eid ul Fitr?.

He said: ?The period of supplication to Allah through fasting and prayer is an exercise that does not only benefit individual Muslims but all the people of our country and beyond?.

In the holy month of Ramadan, all Muslims are required to sacrificing daily requirements and demands for food and drink.

The Rawlingses said: ?We join you in offering prayers for our dear country ? the government and every citizen of the state. Let us apply the same strength of sacrifice we endured over the past month in confronting the challenges that we face as a country?.

Also, the 2012 Vice Presidential Candidate of the main opposition New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, a Muslim himself, has extended his ?best wishes to all Muslims at home and across the world as the end of this sacred month of Ramadan and we celebrate eid ul fitr. I extend same to non-Muslims alike who have also been of tremendous support in various ways during the month?.
