Osiem circuit in the Abuakwa North education directorate has emerged winner for the maiden Basic Reading and Spelling contest for early grade.

The winning circuit would represent the Municipality in the Regional Reading and Spelling contest to be organised in August 2022.

The contest organised by the Ghana Library Authority was on the theme: “Learn to read, read to learn,” for pupils in Primary one, two and three (lower primary)

The other participating circuits; Old Tafo, Kukurantumi main, New Tafo main, Kukurantumi South, and New Tafo South circuits were given certificates of participation.

She said, being able to read and understand was the surest way to answer examination questions to curb exams malpractices.

” I urge teachers and parents to read to the children at the early stage because at that stage children show interest in reading and voluntarily pick up a book,” she said.

She tasked parents to buy reading books including picture books and expose their children to it especially after close from school to prevent them loitering about.

Mr Evans Korletey – Tene, Eastern Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority (GLA), said education was the fundamental right of every Ghanaian child and the libraries exist as knowledge resources hub to provide the needed literacy support.

He said the Ghana Library Authority had so far commissioned 110 public libraries in the country of which Eastern Region has 20.

The GLA has developed a library App to provide electronic reading materials to the public by downloading it from playstore for every Ghanaian to get connected to knowledge with thousands of free reading materials for all ages.
