The Rebecca Foundation held a significant capacity-building workshop on August 6, 2024, to train 30 girl child coordinators in the Greater Accra region.

The workshop focused on addressing gender-based violence in schools and included vital topics such as adolescent sexual reproductive health rights and resource mobilization.

This training, supported by several esteemed organizations, including the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), UNFPA, the Ghana Education Service, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection, is part of the Rebecca Foundation’s “Because I Want To Be” initiative.

This initiative seeks to empower adolescent girls, encouraging them to remain in school until the end of senior high school.

During the workshop, ACP Mercy Wilson Brown provided vital training on gender mainstreaming, identifying and addressing sexually related gender-based violence, and taking necessary actions to stop and penalize perpetrators.

She emphasized the importance of vigilance among Girl Child Coordinators in detecting and responding to such cases.

Andrew Sackey contributed by sharing strategies on resource mobilization, equipping participants with skills to secure resources that will enhance their work in supporting girl children.

Madam Lily Rene Coufie, a public health nurse, highlighted the necessity for improved adolescent sexual health rights and access to information and services, reinforcing the importance of comprehensive support for young girls.

The Rebecca Foundation aims for these newly trained coordinators to disseminate their knowledge and skills, furthering the cause of gender equity and ensuring a supportive environment for girls to thrive in their educational pursuits.
