Redi Tlhabi delves into Police brutality on South 2 North this Friday

1

MangwashiPhiyegaThis Friday on Al Jazeera?s new global talk show?South 2 North, Redi Tlhabi interrogates police brutality with South African police commissioner Mangwashi Phiyega; Eldred de Klerk from Africa Analysis; and Noel Kututwa, Southern Africa director of Amnesty International.

?

Earlier this month, just 50 kilometres from the?South 2 North?studios in Johannesburg, South Africa, eight policemen instructed a Mozambican taxi driver, Emidio Macia, to move his vehicle. When he didn?t, the police handcuffed Macia to the back of their van, dragging his body through the streets in full view of the citizens who watched in horror. Not long after, Macia ended up dead in a police cell.

?

This follows on from last year?s tragedy in South Africa at Marikana, where, in a scene reminiscent of Apartheid-era police brutality, 34 miners were gunned down by police officers as cameras rolled to capture the horror for the world to see.

?

Bheki Cele, South Africa?s previous police commissioner, instituted what he called a ?shoot to kill? policy. With a rise in allegations of torture, rape and extrajudicial killings against the South African police, do they think they are above the law? Why, in a democratic country like South Afirca, with a progressive constitution, do two people die in police custody every day in South Africa? Who polices the police?

?

This isn?t just a South African issue. Redi will ask how police violence in South Africa compares with the rest of the world; whether police brutality is a reflection of a bigger societal problem; and what is the role of post-traumatic stress disorder in connection with this upsurge in violence?
