Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, an agricultural economist and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Manifesto Committee, has voiced concerns about the prevalence of rent-seeking behaviour and policy inefficiencies within Ghana’s agricultural sector.
In a recent interview about “The Agric Manifesto,” Dr. Otokunor underscored the detrimental impact of rent-seekers who manipulate farm inputs for personal gain.
He criticized the practice of non-agriculturalists hoarding essential inputs, releasing them only when they are near expiration, which undermines agricultural productivity and quality.
Highlighting these challenges, Dr. Otokunor emphasized the urgent need for systemic reforms to unleash the sector’s full potential.
He affirmed, “Rent-seeking and policy inefficiency have become significant impediments that we aim to address comprehensively as a political party.”
His remarks reflect ongoing efforts within the NDC to reform agricultural policies and combat practices that hinder equitable access to vital agrarian resources.
