Republic of Congo to charge those responsible for anti-referendum protests

Republic of Congo's cabinet has called for prosecution of those responsible for recent protests that resulted in the loss of human lives, as well as those who engaged in destruction of public and private property.

“An uprising is not an instrument for normal political expression in a state of rule of law and it is not a demonstration of democracy,” a statement issued after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday said.

The “YES” side won the constitutional referendum with 92.3 percent of the votes cast during Sunday’s constitutional referendum in the Republic of Congo.

According to official results, the voter turnout was 72 percent.

The opposition that had called for a boycott of the referendum, termed the official results of the plebiscite as “a lie.”

Some acts of post-election violence were reported in different parts of the country. Enditem
