Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, Executive Director of Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, has urged Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to sign the Peace Pact proposed by the National Peace Council in anticipation of the upcoming December elections.

Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong’s appeal comes after Mr. Nketia laid out specific conditions for the NDC’s endorsement of the Peace Pact.

Mr Nketia expressed doubts about the effectiveness of previous Peace Pacts, particularly referencing the violence and deaths during the 2020 elections, where he alleges that national security operatives killed eight NDC members without accountability.

During an August 20 meeting with the National Peace Council at the NDC headquarters, Mr Nketia demanded the full implementation of recommendations from investigations into violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election. He raised concerns about other electoral issues before considering the Peace Pact.

In an interview with Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, I emphasized the importance of a commitment to peace and democratic principles.

He urged Mr. Nketia to embrace the Peace Pact as a means of upholding democratic values and ensuring peaceful elections.

“We plead with the chairman of the NDC, our big father Asiedu Nketia, that we need democrats to practice democracy.

As a country, we must commit to accepting election results and using legal processes to address any issues,” Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong stated.

He highlighted that the essence of the Peace Pact is to avoid mobilizing people to the streets and to ensure all parties commit to peaceful processes.

Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong’s call underscores the critical need for all political actors to uphold peace and democracy as Ghana approaches the December polls.
