Ghana’s Alex Amankwah became the fifth athlete to fail to progress in the men’s 800m at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.

Alex placed seventh in his group of eight runners in heat 6, recording a time of 1:50.33.

Brandon McBride of Canada, Marcin Lewandowski of Poland and Mark English from Ireland placed first, second and third respectively to qualify from their group.

Amankwah joins other four Ghanaian athletes who are already out of the Rio Olympic Games.

Swimmers Kaya Forson, Abieku Jackson, judoka Szandra Szogedi and boxer Abdul Omar all failed to progress in their respective competitions.

Ghana presented 16 athletes for the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil with just eleven remaining in the competition.
