Road accident claims 7 lives in northwest Kenya

Road Crash

At least seven people lost their lives in a road accident early Sunday in Nakuru County, located northwest of the country’s capital, Nairobi.

Francis Wahome, Nakuru West Subcounty police commander, reported that the collision involved a 14-seater minibus and a long-distance trailer at the town’s roundabout.

Wahome said that at 7:20 a.m. (0420 GMT), the trailer driver lost control, colliding with the minibus, which subsequently hit another trailer.

“Five people died on the spot, and two others, who were rushed to the hospital, passed away while receiving treatment. Several others sustained serious injuries from the collision.”

An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident, with concerns about a possible increase in the death toll.

Witnesses said that the minibus had stopped in an undesignated area, leading an oncoming trailer to collide with it and drag it for a distance.

This tragic incident adds to the growing number of accident victims in 2023, reaching 4,100, according to police statistics.

Kenyan police said that fatal accidents are common in the country, particularly during the festive season, due to reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, and incidents related to drunk driving, walking and riding.
