Five people were confirmed dead early Tuesday following a road accident in Nigeria’s southern state of Ogun, according to local road safety officials.
Two others were injured in the accident involving two cars along the Sagamu-Abeokuta road, one of the busiest expressways in southwest Nigeria.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, a spokesman for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, said the accident was caused by speeding.
One car veered off the road, crossing into another lane, and collided with an oncoming vehicle, Akinbiyi told reporters.
“Three people were initially injured and four died instantly. However, a post-crash report indicates that another of the injured victims has also died,” the official said.
He said the injured were receiving treatment at a government-run hospital.
