Eleven people were killed and another one was injured in Nigeria’s northern state of Sokoto when the vehicle they were traveling in skidded off the road, an official said Tuesday.
The dead, mostly women, were on their way to Lafiya, a town in central north Nasarawa state when the accident occurred on Monday night, said Zakari Shinaka, chairman of the Goronyo local government area.
He said all 11 people died at the accident site, and the injured was admitted to a nearby state-owned hospital.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to negotiate a popular sharp corner near Goronyo town when the accident occurred and seven women and four men died,” he added.
The official called on drivers to be cautious, adding that speeding and careless overtaking was the cause of major accidents on the road.
