Robbery attack leaves two dead at Ghana Muslim Movement headquarters

Two persons lost their lives after a robbery attack at the Ghana Muslim Mission (GMM) Headquarters, at Korle Gonno, Accra, in the early hours of Sunday.

The two, a night security guard at the Mission and an elderly woman, all believed to be in their 60’s, were discovered in pools blood on Sunday morning.

Mr Adams Huud, Regional Manager in Charge of Security and Maintenance at the Mission, speaking to the Ghana News Agency, said the incident took place on Sunday dawn around 0415 hours, saying it was the second robbery in recent times.
He said the security man, who had cuts on his neck, was found dead at the scene, while the elderly woman died shortly while on admission at the Police Hospital.

He said on Sunday morning around 0500 hours he had information from the Regional Chairman of the Mission of an attack at the premise, where the night security man and an elderly women who had come to offer her dawn prayers, had been attacked.

“When I got to the premises, they were both in a pool of their blood. The man appeared dead, but the woman was alive but in pain. I also saw a stick around them with blood stains.”

Mr Huud noted that when he got to the premise, the Korle Bu Police Commander and his team were already at the scene. “We quickly rushed both victims to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, but there was no bed so we proceeded to the Police Hospital where the man was pronounced dead and the woman was attended to, but died some few minutes later.”

He expressed shock at the incident, saying, “as a religious premise nothing really valuable was kept there to attract robbers, to the extent of them killing two people.”

“We observed that the only thing the robbers took away was a table top fridge in the Regional Office.”

Mr Huud said the Regional and National Chairmen of the GMM had informed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), who had assured them that he was involved in the investigation, hence they should be rest assured and calm and tell members not to panic.

“Our members were traumatized because Sunday too happened to be a day when all members across the region converge at the premise for religious activities. So a lot of them got there and were shocked at the incident, because they did not expect that.”

He appealed to authorities to as a matter of urgency, evacuate all the squatters behind the premise because they posed a great threat to the Mission and dwellings in the area.
