The Rotary Club of Kumasi-East has presented 11 boxes of peritoneal dialysis kits and four wheel chairs to the Paediatric Nephrology Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

Peritoneal dialysis kits are used for removing waste products from the blood when the kidney cannot adequately do the job any longer.

The items, worth $7,500, were donated with support from the family of the Late Nana Adu Boakye of Toronto, Canada, a close family relation to the Club.

Nana Kofi Ayesu-Boahene, President of the Club, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the presentation, said child cancer had become one of the worrying health situations in Ghana and the cost of dialysis was high.

He said the donation was to support the kids whose parents could not afford the price of the dialysis kits.

The President appealed to individuals and corporate institutions to come to the aid of the Unit to help alleviate some burden of the parents.

Dr Anima Sarfo, Head of Paediatric Nephrology Unit at KATH, receiving the items, expressed gratitude to the Club for the kind gesture.

She said the donation had come at the right time since dialysis kits were very expensive and most of the parents could not afford it.

“The patients we have, most of them are poor and the starting price of peritoneal dialysis is GHC2,000.00 and is cash and carry.

Most of the parents cannot afford it,” she said and added that the kits would go a long way to save a lot of children with such health conditions.

Dr Sarfo appealed to the government to include the cost of dialysis for children in the National Health Insurance Scheme to help save the lives of children in the country.

She also called on benevolent corporate institutions and individuals for support to ensure the smooth running of the Unit to meet the health needs of children.
