Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), on Monday chose a career diplomat as the party’s new secretary general following the resignation of former Secretary General Daniel Chongolo in November 2023.

Paul Makonda, CCM ideology and publicity secretary, declared Emmanuel Nchimbi, a career diplomat and former minister of home affairs, as the party’s new secretary general.

Makonda told a news conference at the end of CCM’s one-day extraordinary meeting in Zanzibar that Nchimbi was approved by members of the party’s National Executive Committee after the name was proposed by the party’s Central Committee.
