Rwanda hands over Burundian police officer

A Burundian policeman who entered a Rwandan village in western Rwanda was on Monday handed over to Burundi, said local authorities.

The policeman Theogene Irakoze was arrested on April 13, 2018 in Bweyeye sector in Rusizi district by residents and security agencies while trying to sneak back into Burundi, according district authorities.

“The district leadership has handed over to Burundian authorities their police officer who was arrested in Rwanda as a sign of good neighborliness,” Rusizi district mayor Frederic Harelimana told journalists on Monday in Rusizi.

Harelimana said the arrest was made after local residents saw the the policeman wielding a knife who illegally entered Rwanda.

The handover followed investigations which showed the policeman had entered without any sinister motives, said the mayor.

During the handover, the 36-year-old Burundian police officer in civilian clothes told media that he swayed into Rwandan territory after he plunged into the Ruhwa water stream under influence of alcohol. Enditem
