International Day Of Families

Rwanda on Thursday marked the International Day of Families in sectors countrywide, with public gatherings to promote awareness on addressing challenges affecting family welfare.

The celebrations were organized by the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion and its partners under the theme, “Together, let’s build the family we want.”

There is need to collectively address challenges facing families such as domestic conflicts that could result into marriage breakups, teenage pregnancies, malnutrition and stunting, said Rwandan Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Solina Nyirahabimana at a gathering in Ngarama Sector, Gatsibo district in eastern Rwanda.

Noting that family wrangles were the root causes of challenges facing families, Nyirahabimana called on couples to practice dialogue to avoid conflicts.

She also urged parents to be close to their children in order to ensure their proper upbringing.

The ministry has prepared different learning aids to facilitate public awareness aimed at preventing and responding to all forms of gender-based violence, child abuse, malnutrition and other challenges which leave direct impact on social wellbeing in families, she said.

The International Day of Families is observed on May 15 every year, which provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting them. Enditem
