The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ministers of Health and Ministers Responsible for HIV and AIDS have resolved to have a financing hub to enable them to overcome health challenges they face as individuals and as a block.

Malawi Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, who chaired the meeting made the announcement Wednesday at the end of a 3-day meeting that was held in Malawi capital Lilongwe.

Chiponda said the meeting had made the resolution considering that the health ministries in the region face financial challenges despite the fact that they get support from international cooperating partners.

She said when successfully implemented, the financing hub will see health ministries in the region tap into it for the implementation of their respective health programs.

“We have adopted the creation of a financing hub that is going to be accessible to all member states: it is one of the strategies of trying to support each other so that when we want to move in overcoming the challenges that we face in the health sector, we should move as a block and not leave any nation behind,” explained the minister.

She said the meeting has put up a team of technocrats who are going to plan the implementation process and how best they’re going to mobilize resources for the financing hub.

Chiponda added that the meeting had also emphasized the need for member states not to lose focus on other existing diseases such as TB, malaria, and HIV and AIDS in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

SADC Executive Secretary, Elias Mpedi Magosi, applauded the adoption of the financing hub by the region’s Ministers of Health and Ministers Responsible for HIV and AIDS saying the resolution will assist member states to have the chance of attracting resources.

He noted that the bulk of the region’s resources are partly provided by the member states themselves and that the other part is sourced from the international cooperating partners.

But the SADC Executive Secretary said with the adopted financing hub, the region will have a tool that will provide opportunity for packaging and putting the SADC program proposals “in a favorable and easier position for cooperating funders to want to support development programs” laid by the health ministries.

He added that the financing hub will also create knowledge for the region and serve as a repository of the information that is required for valid health challenges and diseases facing the region.

The meeting was attended by SADC Ministers of Health and Ministers Responsible for HIV and AIDS physically and virtually. Enditem
