Real Sociedad striker Umar Sadiq has been forced to withdraw from Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations due to a knee injury and will return to San Sebastian for treatment.

The 26-year-old, who has scored two goals in La Liga this season, suffered the injury to his left knee in a training session as Nigeria were preparing for their Africa Cup of Nations debut against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday and has been replaced by Trabzonspor forward Paul Onuachu.

Speaking to the press on Friday ahead of his side’s La Liga game away to local rivals Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil admitted the club still did not know the full extent of Sadiq’s injury, but he expressed relief that the injury was to the player’s left knee, rather than the right.

Sadiq missed nearly all of the 2022-23 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee in September 2022, shortly after signing from Almeria.

The striker looks certain to miss at least three weeks of action, and the big question for Real Sociedad is whether he will be available for their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain in February.
