Calm has returned to Salaga in the Savannah Region after some youth of the town went on rampage on Tuesday evening setting the Salaga South Constituency office of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ablaze and pulling down NPP billboards in the area.

The youth undertook the action in protest against the selection of Damongo as the capital of the newly created Savannah Region.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Tuesday presented the Constitutional Instrument to the chiefs and people of the Savannah Region at the Jubilee House in Accra to give legal backing to the creation of the region.

During the ceremony, the President announced that Damongo was chosen as the capital of the region, a decision that did not go down well with some youth of Salaga and thereby urged them to resort to destruction of property.

The Police in the area intervened swiftly to prevent the agitated youth from burning the office of the East Gonja Municipal Assembly as well as the residence of the Chief Executive of the Municipality.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Mohammed Yusif Tanko, Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command confirmed to Ghana News Agency that seven suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.
