Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Director for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a bold statement regarding the state of Ghana’s creative arts industry, declaring it to be “dead.”

Speaking on Accra-based United Showbiz, Gyamfi argued that the only sector of the creative arts that remains somewhat vibrant is the music industry, but even this is due to the self-driven efforts of artists rather than government support.

“The Creative Arts Industry is dead. The only aspect of the creative arts which is thriving is the music industry, and even that is thriving because of the effort put in by the musicians themselves,” Gyamfi said. He pointed out that other segments of the creative arts, such as drama and concert parties, have seen a decline, with the once-popular forms like “kyekyekule” and “drama” fading into obscurity. He also questioned the disappearance of prominent figures in Ghanaian entertainment, such as the late Santos and OD, who once dominated the creative scene.

According to Gyamfi, a policy framework that previously supported the creative arts has collapsed, leaving the industry struggling. He expressed regret over the loss of vibrant talent and resources that could have made Ghana’s creative arts sector internationally competitive. However, Gyamfi emphasized that the responsibility to rejuvenate the industry lies with the government.

He criticized the current administration for paying “lip service” to the sector and failing to implement the necessary measures that would allow it to thrive. “If you have a government that does not care about its creatives, this is what will happen,” he concluded, calling on the government to take actionable steps to revive the creative arts and recognize the potential of Ghana’s artists.
