The school children made the call during a sensitization forum on access to safe abortion and contraceptive usage among young people at Adantia, a farming community .

The event was organised by Global Media Foundation, human rights media advocacy organisation with support from Safe Abortion Action Fund under its three-year project: Advocating for Young People Access to Safe Abortion and Contraceptive Services in Brong-Ahafo.

The event also forms part of activities lined up by GLOMEF to observed this year’s International Day of Action for Women’s Health which falls on 28 of May.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Fulfill Women?s Right to Health, Dignity and Bodily Integrity- End Violence Against Women in All its Forms”.

The school children stated “we cannot talk of a strong Ghana without our government respecting, protecting, and fulfilling the human rights of women and girls in all their dimensions, including the right to sexual and reproductive health”.
They therefore called on Ghana government to ensure that the rights of women and girls are well protected.

The CEO of GLOMEF, Raphael Godlove Ahenu, said the engagement with the school children was to also educate the school children on the on-going post-2015 agenda processes.

Mr Ahenu stressed the urgent need to undertake collective efforts and ensure that women’s health and in particular their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights is given due attention both in the formulation and implementation of the new set of development goals.
