Trainees from the Schools of Hygiene are on the brink of staging a mass demonstration unless their long-overdue allowances are urgently and promptly paid.
The Coalition of Students of the Schools of Hygiene is demanding payment for trainee allowances that have been outstanding since January 2023, which includes a full year for the 2021 batch from the Ho School of Hygiene.
The students, concerned about potential long-term unemployment, have cited delays attributed to financial clearance issues from the Ministry of Finance.
Despite several engagements with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the payment delays still need to be resolved.
Emmanuel Awuku, the Coalition’s General Secretary, passionately voiced the growing frustration among the trainees, a sentiment that many can empathize with.
“Tempers are rising, and the urge to protest at the presidency and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources is increasing daily,” Awuku stated, emphasizing the potential disruption to the Ministry’s operations.
“As health trainees, we are constitutionally entitled to receive our allowances, but stakeholders seem to use technicalities to deny us.
We have not received trainee allowances for two years, and some have completed their training without receiving a single cedi.”
The Coalition is not only calling for immediate action but is also resolutely prepared to take to the streets if its demands are unmet. This is a serious matter that needs urgent attention.
The trainees also request prompt postings for batches that have yet to be deployed.
