Government schools will reopen in Chad on Jan. 15 after more than two months of the teachers’ strike, the country’s union of teachers said on Friday.

The Chad Teachers’ Union made the decision after Chadian Prime Minister Succes Masra met with the union leaders in the national capital of N’Djamena early Friday.

“We hope to continue with the negotiations and dialogue while children go to school,” the union said in a statement after the meeting.

“Children must return to school because their place is there. Schools have to reopen,” Masra said.

Chadian primary, secondary, and university teachers went on strike on Nov. 2, 2023, to demand amelioration of the working conditions and payment of salaries cut during the 2016 economic crisis.
