A mysterious fire at the mortuary section of a government hospital went up in south Nigeria, burning scores of corpses, according to local police on Sunday.

Almost all the corpses at the mortuary were burned beyond recognition as the fire caused extensive damage in the Enugwu-Ukwu General Hospital in Njikoka area of the southeastern state of Anambra on Saturday evening, the police said.

Haruna Mohammed, spokesman for the police in Anambra, said the cause of the fire has yet to be established.

The fire was put out with the help of local volunteers, he said. Enditem
