Seeds of Empowerment: Transforming Agriculture with Knowledge and Sustainability

Dr. Kwaku Asante, a renowned scientist from the Crop Research Institute (CRI), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has educated members of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) in the Krachi East Municipality on Agroecology and Circular economy principles.

The sensitisation workshop was conducted with funding support from the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Dr Asante underscored the benefits of agroecology, which includes improved crop yields and quality, reduced chemical use and pollution, enhanced ecosystem services, better livelihoods for farmers and increased food security.

He emphasized the need to reduce chemical fertilizer and pesticide inputs in crops.

Dr. Asante explained that excessive chemical fertilizer use harms soil health, pollutes water sources and threatens biodiversity.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Dr Asante said, agroecology and circular economy are futuristic of sustainable agriculture.

He said by adopting these practices, farmers will improve soil fertility, increase crop diversity and enhance ecosystem services.

Mr. Francis Yabameh, a member of PFAG praised CRI’s efforts, saying, “we appreciate Dr. Asante’s expertise and commitment to sustainable agriculture.”

Other members, who were engaged by GNA assured to adopt agroecology and circular economy Practice to produce organic food crops in a sustainable manner.

The workshop, which was organised by the PFAG in collaboration with CRI, brought over 70 participants across the Oti Region.
