The reelection bid of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, received boost on Sunday as the people of Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State endorsed him for an additional tenure.
The endorsement came from a cross section of the people of Awgu council comprising professionals, political and business leaders under the aegis of Save Awgu Forum Enugu state (SAFE), who extolled the leadership qualities of the Deputy Senate President (DSP) Ike Ekweremadu whom they described as a worthy representative.
Thousands of SAFE members besieged the country home of Senator Ekweremadu, at Mpu in Aninri local government area, where they assured him of their total support and commitment towards his re-election, saying those who are jostling for the position should tarry awhile since a champion is already occupying the position for now.
Political leader of Awgu people and business mogul, Emperor Baywood Ibe, who spoke for the delegation, said that with the endorsement, Awgu people have spoken with finality.
?Save Awgu Forum is working for the integration and development of Awgu, we are here to endorse our Ike Ekweremadu and we will make sure he goes back. We all belong to greater Awgu, Aninri was carved out of old Awgu; a father cannot forsake his son just like a mother cannot forsake her daughter.
?We have made mistakes in the past but with this new synergy, we will take Enugu by the storm; we cannot fight ourselves, that era is gone. We are set to liberate our people from the stranglehold of divide and rule and bad politics of Enugu state, we are here to speak with one voice. When we move we are going to save Awgu, Aninri, Oji River, Udi, Ezeagu and entire Enugu state,? he said.
Overwhelmed by the groundswell of support and encomiums poured on him, Senator Ekweremadu, who represents Enugu West senatorial district made up of Aninri, Awgu, Oji River, Udi and Ezeagu council areas, pledged never to disappoint the people, assuring that if re-elected, he would redouble his effort in attracting projects and development to the zone and Enugu state in general.
?I want to thank you my brothers from Awgu. I believe that what you are doing today is a symbol of what is happening in the hearts and minds of the people of Oji River, Udi and Ezeagu as well.
?They have accepted me to be their representative and I pledge here and now, as always, to represent them to the best of my ability and to ensure that whatever we can do to change their story, we will continue to do that and their story would continue to change for the better. ?As I speak today, this is the only senatorial district in this country that can boast of youth development centres in all the local governments. Today we are developing a dam worth about N12b that will supply not only water but electricity to the whole of this area.
?As I speak today, we have about six thousand of our young men and women that are benefitting from our educational assistance. But the point must be made that all these would not have been possible without your support. So, now that I have received this added impetus, it means therefore that we are going to move with greater vigour to achieve greater things for our people.
?We are not in politics just to win. Winning is not everything in politics; we are in politics to make a change, to make a difference in the lives of our people; to bring succour to those who are poor; to ensure that the less privileged are well represented and their voice heard. That is what we are in politics to do,? he said.
