Senegalese diplomats urged to lead war against terrorism, cross-border crimes

Senegal's President Macky Sall has urged the country's diplomats to spearhead the fight against terrorism and cross-border crimes for the good of the nation, Africa and the world.

The president was speaking over the weekend in Dakar during the opening of a conference bringing together all Senegalese ambassadors, consuls-general and economic as well military attaches,

“There are challenges, especially security challenges like cross-border crimes and terrorism that need our attention. We need to address them in order to promote free movement of people and goods,” he said.

He said Senegalese diplomacy should address protection of fellow citizens, promotion of economic and social development, maintenance of good neighbourliness, pursuit of African integration objectives, protection of human rights as well as defense of peace and security in Africa and across the world.

“We shall carry out these battles in respect of our values that include openness and humility because, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and consideration,” Sall said.

Senegal’s Prime Minister Mohammad Dionne urged diplomats and military attaches to close all avenues for any form of trafficking (drugs and arms), cross-border crimes and terrorism which could compromise the country’s growth.

“I urge you to double vigilance, reinforce your role of surveillance and analyze warning signs not just in the West African region, but across the world,” he said.

Dionne reiterated the need for a regional approach in the fight against terrorism.

Foreign Minister Mankeur Ndiaye urged diplomats to remember that diplomatic missions are always targets of terrorist attacks, while the country’s army boss Gen. Mamadou Sow said there was need for “everyone’s contribution” in the fight against terrorism.

“Terrorism is a global threat that requires involvement of everyone and not just the army,” Sow said, adding that “in prevention of terrorism, every citizen should be a protector of others for his own security and that of his family to be guaranteed.” Enditem
