Shipping Lines Schooled On Electronic Vessel Booking System

As part of moves to automate the Port of Tema, the Port Authority is set to launch an electronic-vessel booking system which is meant to cut down the processing time of allocation of space for vessels to shipping lines.


To achieve a smooth implementation, a training session has been organized by the port authority to school shipping lines and their agents.

GPHAThe e-vessel booking system will make it easier for shipping lines to apply for berthing arrangements through the website of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

Hitherto, it took between 3 to 4 days for the bookings of space for vessels to be approved but now shipping lines and their agents can book space for their vessels within 24hours at their own convenience.

The electronic vessel booking system which is expected to bring relieve to shipping lines would also improve the turnaround time of services in the port.

The IT Manager of GPHA, David Boison said the e-vessel booking is part of the strategies to automate the port of Tema to serve clients better.

“This service is going to help our clients by cutting down the time they spend visiting the port, chasing staff with paper work to have service provided. This is electronic it is real time it is fast so it is instant service that we are providing to our clients,” he said.

He added that shipping lines don’t need to send agents which cuts down the cost of transportation as well as stress.

“They can sit anywhere with their ipad, galaxy and even desk top computer to do booking,” he added.
