Shootings heard near the US Capitol in Washington DC

Capitol Hill police had the scene of the shooting under tight security

Shots have been fired near the US Capitol in Washington DC after a high-speed police chase.

Kim Dine of the Capitol Police told reporters it is thought it was an “isolated incident” and not terrorism.

A police officer was injured, he said, and a suspect is in custody. President Obama was briefed on the incident, reports the BBC.

The shooting happened two weeks after 12 people were killed and three injured in a shooting at nearby Navy Yard.

One eyewitness told the BBC he heard 10-12 shots following a car chase near the Capitol.

“I heard a pop pop pop and we were told to get down,” Senator Bob Casey told the paper.

“Gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill requiring all occupants in all House office buildings to shelter in place,” said the email to staff.

“Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows.”
