The former Vice President and flagbearer of the official opposition party, the Sierra Leone’s People’s Party, Solomon Berewa led a team of concerned citizens to the residence of the Vice President Alhaji Samuel Sam Sumana over the weekend to find a way of “resolving the issue” between him and the party.
He explained to a local radio station Monday that in the meeting he and his entourage informed the Vice President that the current impasse “is not in the interest of the nation as it does not auger well for good governance”.
He said after Alhaji Samuel Sam Sumana agreed to resign but on the condition that “his benefits will be paid to him and his good name tarnished by the party is restored and protected”.
He furthered that “I was surprised to learn later that the Vice President renegged from his earlier statement saying he would not resign”.
According to reports, the whereabout of the VP is still a mystery as colleague journalists are still insisting the VP was still not at his residence. Meanwhile, the American embassy in Sierra Leone have also kept mute noting that “it is an internal matter and let it be resolved internally”.
However, the governing All People’s Congress party on Sunday confirmed that the American embassy in Freetown has informed them that the Vice President has requested “for political asylum in their embassy”.
According to the statement “the VP told the embassy that his life was in danger”.
The secretariat denied the allegation there was “no threat on the life of the VP nor any body of his family nor is the party aware of any other threat to his person”.
The party explained that Sam Sumana had 30 days to appeal to the party congress according to the party constitution but instead he is using “smear campaign tactics by villifying his superior and taking diplomatic measures to request for political asylum” so as to bring the party into bad light.
