The Labour Party(LP) in Anambra state has just raised an alarm of an
impending social crises in the state that will be reminiscent of what
happened in Nigeria when the June 12, 1993 presidential election was
nullified by the National chairman of the Federal electoral
commission, Prof Humphrey Nwosu on the orders of the then military
head of state , General Ibrahim Babangida.
A director in the Dr Ifeanyi Ubah Campaign Organisation in the just
concluded Nov 16, 2013 Anambra state governorship election Chief
Maduka Ichekwuluche Okoye raised this alarm yesterday in a press
briefing in Awka.
He said it has become imperative to shout out because LP will not
allow a repeat of the Nnewi North Local Government Area(LGA)election
which he claimed, the party won landslide before the election was
called off during collation at about 5.30pm on January 18, 2014 by the
acting chairman of the Anambra state Independent Electoral
Commission(ANSIEC), Chief Sylvester Okonkwo when it dawned on them
that the Labour Party was making a clean sweep of the poll.
Chief Okoye said he participated actively in the election and
commended the police authority for refuting the grounds with which the
All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA)-led Anambra state government
used to annul the widely acknowledged free and fair election.
He therefore warned that Anambra youths have been under unbearable
pressure and ready to ensure that the very peaceful election was not
repeated in Nnewi North council. He pleads that to prevent a the
impending bloodbath in the industrial area popularly called ?the Japan
of Nigeria?, the state government should release the results and to
swear in the Labour Party chairmanship candidate, Lady Ifeoma Offodeme
and the eight LP and two APGA councillors who won the poll.
Okoye passionately appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan, the
National Assembly, security agencies, community and religious leaders
and other people of goodwill nationwide to prevail on Anambra state
governor, Mr Peter Obi not to set the state ablaze through a careless
cancellation of an election that was free and fair.
According to him,”Anambra people are ever peace-loving, the Labour
Party and her members are law-abiding, we have been clearly pushed to
the wall and we will surely put our lives on the line to ensure that
justice is done.
?We will not allow anyone to continue to waste our mandate and
resources just because their hearts are not big enough to concede
defeat. Let everyone please tell Gov Peter Obi to give peace a chance
in our dear Nnewi and state in memory of late Igbo leader-Ikemba
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. Because we do not want a repeat of what
is happening in Rivers state here?.
It would be recalled that the ANSIEC boss, Sylvester Okonkwo on
Saturday, Jan 18, 2014 called off the re-scheduled Nnewi North local
government election midway into the collation of results of the
exercise on the grounds of insecurity and violence, a claim the
Anambra state Police command and election observers and monitors
instantly refuted and denied.
