Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire has ordered the swift release of COVID-19 funds to the regional states and the Banadir Regional Administration (BRA) to curb the spread of the virus after the ministry of health confirmed that 60 people have been infected by the deadly virus.

Khaire has ordered relevant ministries to reprogram and scale up its activities to minimize the risk of food insecurity and provide life-saving support to the most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Prime Minister instructed the Finance Ministry to deliver 1 million U.S. dollars to each regional state and the BRA,” Khaire’s office said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He made the announcement during a virtual meeting with the COVID-19 emergency response committee members.

Somalia has announced a raft of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, which has had a negative impact on the country’s already struggling economy.

The Horn of Africa nation has so far recorded 60 COVID-19 cases, including two deaths. Enditem
