About 20 million people have registered so far on Tele-Birr, the Chinese-developed mobile money service solution platform in Ethiopia, according to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Speaking to Ethiopian parliamentarians Tuesday, Prime Minister Ahmed said the state telecoms service provider Ethio-Telecom’s Tele-Birr technology solution has defied critics since its launch, helping Ethiopians facilitate smooth electronic payment transactions such as payment of traffic fines, which previously was prone to corruption.
The Tele-Birr mobile money service solution built by the Chinese tech giant Huawei was launched by Ethio-Telecom in May 2021.
Ethiopia is undertaking extensive telecom modernization services with the help of Chinese firms as part of the East African country’s aim of realizing digital inclusion and boosting the size of its digital economy, with the provision of reliable, high bandwidth and high-speed telecom services.
Ahmed disclosed that Ethio-Telecom has managed to increase the number of customers by 27 million in four years to reach 65 million customers currently.
The Ethiopian prime minister said the government’s technological modernization drive is bearing fruits, with the recent launching of 5G telecom services being the latest example.
Ethio-Telecom in May launched a pre-commercial 5G services trial in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, in partnership with Huawei. Ethiopia’s first 5G services, which was launched across six mobile stations in Addis Ababa, is said to be part of the Ethiopian government’s digital transformation aspirations. Enditem
