Former Chief Justice of Ghana, Sophia Akuffo, has voiced deep concern about the current state of the country’s youth, revealing that their lack of hope often keeps her awake at night.

In an exclusive interview with TV3’s Alfred Ocansey, Akuffo lamented that young people seem to find their only glimmers of hope in opportunities abroad, such as securing visas or admissions to foreign universities.

Akuffo admitted she is not preoccupied with the economic details but is troubled by the apparent hopelessness among the youth. “When you talk to them, they don’t sound very hopeful,” she said. “Their hope often revolves around leaving Ghana rather than finding opportunities within the country, which I find extremely sad.” However, she also emphasized the untapped potential of these young people, which if harnessed, could bring about a positive change.

She also stressed the need for an environment conducive to entrepreneurship in Ghana, advocating for improved access to credit for startups. “We should create conditions that allow young people, including those with advanced degrees, to start their own businesses and employ others,” she added. This requires a systemic change and a supportive environment.
