Poachers killed a record 1,215 rhinoceroses in South Africa last year, up from 1,004 in 2013, the government said Thursday.

More than two-thirds of the animals were culled in Kruger Park, one of Africa’s largest wildlife reserves.

The number of detained suspects rose from 343 in 2013 to 386 in 2014.

The government’s anti-poaching strategy has included the creation of an intensive protection zone within Kruger Park, improving international cooperation against poachers coming from neighbouring countries and relocating rhinos to safe areas within South Africa.

But it has failed to curb the killing of rhinos, whose horn can fetch nearly 100,000 dollars per kilogramme in Asia, where it is used in traditional medicine.
