Former South African and Chilean presidents on Wednesday called on the Global South to speak with one voice and follow rules-based trade for the development of the global trade.

Kgalema Motlanthe, South African former president and Ricardo Lagos, former president of Chile said this at a dialogue in Johannesburg.

Both former presidents noted that the world is facing narrow nationalism, protectionism and populism which they said in “dangerous” to the world.

“African and the Global South have to cement relations with Latin America and speak with one voice. We are sitting with bully boys. The developing and developed countries should be equal in terms of trade. The U.S. have eroded all the institutions established post World War II. We have to try and create the balance of trade,” said Motlanthe.

He stated that the United States would be overtaken as the global super power fast than many people in the world expect.

Motlanthe said Trump’s utterances to revoke the Monroe Doctrine to treat Latin American countries as his “backyard” is dangerous.

He said, “The madness that President Donald Trump is unleashing may result in U.S. losing its position as the leading economy. The U.S. is not taking strategic decisions. The U.S. does not want to be subjected to the same rules of trade, human rights, international court of justice and others where he feels the views do not resonate with them.”

Motlanthe said the weak and developing countries must unite and speak with one voice.

Lagos said the United States wants the World Trade Organization to do as it pleases and not listen to the developing world, which he said is “dangerous.”

Lagos said, “South-South cooperation is essential in a globalized world. If we do not do that nobody is going to listen to us. Rules are for the developing and developed world, all countries have to compete at the same level. The U.S. says if you do not do 1,2 or 3 I will impose tariffs on you, It does not work like that. We have to operate according to the law.”

Lagos said the countries of the South should guard against the bullying of the United States which wants to control the world. Enditem
