The South African police on Wednesday arrested 17 people for allegedly looting and burning some shops owned by foreigners in Pretoria.

On Wednesday morning, taxi drivers hijacked trucks and buses and used them to block roads in Pretoria CBD. Some protesters looted the nearby shops and set fire to buildings.

“The police and the Tshwane Metro Police Department have since intensified deployments and will maintain a presence in the central business district to ensure that no further incidents of criminality recur. In the meantime, 10 suspects have been arrested for possession of suspected stolen property, while an additional seven have been arrested for public violence,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.

Mack Makata from South African National Taxi Council said, “we had planned for a demonstration to highlight some of our issues with the shooting of one of us, and we believe some criminal elements took advantage and exploited our plan to advance their criminal intent.” Enditem
