The South African police on Saturday deployed more police in the Zaaiplaas area in Limpopo district after protesting crowd burnt another school on Friday night.

The residents of the Zaaiplaas area on Tuesday started protesting over service delivery. On Thursday they burnt an administration block at Rehlahlilwe Primary School. They also torched a police vehicle injuring a police constable. The police said around 10:30 p.m. on Friday they burnt school administration block at Leriane Secondary School.

“It is alleged that a group of community members went on rampage and torched this building before running away. Since these violent protests started in the area, five suspects aged between 28 and 50 were arrested for public violence. The police are currently on the hunt for more suspects who also include ringleaders,” said police provincial commissioner in Limpopo Nneke Ledwaba.

The violent protesters barricaded roads and were throwing objects like stones at the police, said Ledwaba. Ledwaba warned that those who destroyed property will be hunted and brought to book. He warned the community to hold peaceful protest and avoid attacking the police. Enditem
