South African police on Tuesday destroyed 23,055 firearms that were used to commit crimes, confiscated by or surrendered to authorities.
The guns that were destroyed included rifles, shotguns and handguns.
“Melting these firearms… ensures that these firearms will never find their way back in circulation,” police spokesperson Brenda Muridili said.
“The police will continue to fight the proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition as they pose a threat to the safety and security of the inhabitants of this country on a journey to a safer South Africa,” she said.
This is the second gun destruction operation of the year, taking a combined total of about 53,000 illegal firearms off the streets in 2019. Enditem
