The South African government must take urgent action to stop the ongoing chaos in the trucking industry which has claimed more than 200 lives in the past year, a trade union said on Thursday.

“Should government not heed our call and intervene, we will be forced to call upon all employer associations nationally to stop operations and cease movement of all goods until government takes effective action,” South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) said.

According to the union, dozens of trucks have been attacked and torched, mostly in KwaZulu-Natal Province in the past year, leaving at least 213 people killed. Enditem
