Sponsors of Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, announced plans to protest against the Chief Justice on August 21, 2024.
They accuse the Chief Justice of delaying the transmission of the bill to the President for assent.
The protest follows the Supreme Court’s decision to postpone rulings on injunction applications related to the bill’s transmission, setting the final judgment date for the same day.
Samuel Nartey George, the bill’s lead sponsor and Ningo-Prampram MP, declared the intention for a peaceful march during a visit to religious and traditional leaders. He emphasized the public’s demand for swift judicial action.
“The Chief Justice’s delay is preventing Parliament from fulfilling its constitutional duty,” George asserted. “We expect a resolution, as Parliament has already passed the bill unanimously.”
The bill, which prohibits LGBTQ+ activities, promotion, advocacy, and funding, was approved by Parliament after years of debate in February.
Legal challenges have since impeded its enactment pending the Supreme Court’s rulings.
